CME Requirements for Physicians

State of Michigan - LARA Requirements - 3 Year Cycle

Osteopathic physicians are required to complete 150 hours of CME, with a minimum of 60 hours earned in activities designated as Category 1 credit. 40 of those 60 hours must be designated as AOA Category credit.

Medical Doctors are required to complete 150 hours of CME, with a minimum of 75 hours earned in activities designated as Category 1 programs. The remaining 75 hours may be comprised of Category 1 & 2 credits within the maximums allowed.

Topic-Specific Requirements

  • Implicit Bias Training - For initial renewals completed after June 1, 2021, completion of one hour of implicit bias training is required for each year of licensure since June 1, 2021. If renewing prior to June 1, 2022, implicit bias training is not required for that renewal. Once the initial renewal is completed, then 1 hour of implicit bias training will be required for each year of the current license cycle going forward. Please note, this is not a one-time training and must be completed for each renewal cycle prior to the renewal being completed. (R 338.7004 updated 3/23). Click here for more information.
  • Medical Ethics - A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education earned in the area of Medical Ethics is required for all renewal cycles that began on or after 04/26/2021.
  • Pain & Symptom Management - A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education earned in the area of pain and symptom management.  At least 1 of the 3 hours must include controlled substance prescribing

One-Time Requirements
  • DEA 8 Hour Training - For more information please visit FAQ's or www.dea.gov
    • This is a one-time DEA requirement. Once you’ve attested to completing eight hours of required training, you will not need to complete additional training for subsequent DEA renewals. It is important to note that for medical licensure in Michigan, physicians must still obtain three hours of training on pain and symptom management every 3-year licensure cycle.
  • Human Trafficking - One time training, no CME required. Beginning with the 2017 renewal cycle for initial licensure beginning December 20, 2021.
