Osteopathic Resources

Osteopathic Recognition

MSUCOM’s Statewide Campus System (SCS) provides educational programs, program consultation, and resources to member programs seeking Osteopathic Recognition (OR) according to ACGME guidelines.   These services include programming focused on the distinctive competencies of health promotion and osteopathic manipulative treatment as articulated by the osteopathic tenets of body unity, self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.

OR support is available as part of the Full or Core services membership. Services can also be purchased separately as part of an Osteopathic Recognition Subscription and are created in partnership with MSUCOM, the Statewide Campus System, and its members.

Osteopathic Recognition programming is offered in-person and online with asynchronous access via our members-only resources.  Examples include the following, with additional details available on request:

  • Online OPP/OMT modules
  • Osteopathic Principles eJournal Club
  • Consultation

In addition, MSUCOM/SCS faculty have published research on OR and continue to explore ways to meaningfully integrate osteopathic principles and practice into graduate medical education programs under the single accreditation system.

Osteopathic Foundations Curriculum

Osteopathic Principles and Practices (OPP) refers to a philosophical and practical approach to patient management and treatment, including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), based on an understanding of body unity, self-healing, and self-regulatory mechanisms the interrelationship of structure and function. OPP further defines the conceptual knowledge and practical application of the distinct behavioral, philosophical, and procedural aspects of clinical practice related to the four tenets of osteopathic medicine as follows:

● the body is a unit;
● a person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit;
● the body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance;
● structure and function are reciprocally interrelated;

Rational treatment is based upon understanding the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.
